Martha's Vineyard
Food & Wine Festival
Would you like to know more about delicious sake? Last year, Nancy Cushman, Sake Sommelier and Co-proprietor at o ya restaurant, taught you all you need to know about sake and sushi. This year, come learn and taste the differences between the major categories of sake and how to enjoy them beyond Japanese food. Join Nancy again as she guides you through some unexpected food pairings.
The last two years, Dan Michaud of Ruby Wines has taken participants through a tour of "French Whites" and "White Wines of the World" while sampling the best oysters the Island has to offer. Join him again this year, fresh back from Spain, as he takes you on a journey of "Whites of the Iberian Peninsula" paired with oysters from Martha's Vineyard's own Sweet Neck Farms. Discover the sparkling Cavas of the Penedes Mountains, the racy whites of the northern and western coastal regions on the Atlantic - Albarino, Godello & Chacoli …and the richer whites of Rioja and Rueda.
"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans."
- Ernest Hemingway (A Moveable Feast)
White with Fish, Red with Meat was a standing edict for generations until some brilliant critic announced that it was fair game to drink pinot noir with grilled salmon. And the gates opened and red wine with fish preparations have become as readily accepted as Chai Latte for breakfast.
Today the tables have turned, chefs are bolder with mixing global tastes. This is why whites should have a prominent place at the table with the most assertive flavors.
In this seminar, I will illustrate my point by tasting you on beautiful white wines with 6 tastes of food. I will also include a mainstream red with each taste to illustrate compatabilty and/or contrast.
We will all learn why White Wine should be at the top of the list when choosing a beverage compatible with a contemporary chef's whims.
A Journey through Sicily and Sardegna, explored through Italian Island producers Planeta (Sicily) and Sella & Mosca (Sardegna). Have you heard of grapes like Torbato, Cannonau, Frappato and Grecanico? If not, this seminar is for you as we will explore the not-so-well-known vineyards on the rocky coast of Sardegna down to the volcanic soils of Mt Etna in Sicily, offering a wine journey that is figuratively miles away from the more traditional wine regions on Italy's mainland. You will also be amazed at what a value these wonderful wines provide!
Most people don’t expect much from their meatballs…but those people haven’t met Chef Dante de Magistris, chef/owner of Dante in Cambridge, who is known throughout the area for his mouthwatering meatball masterpieces. Join Boston's beloved star chef Dante for an instruction class of Italian cuisine with a special focus on meatballs. Get rolling as Dante teaches how to make his traditional veal and pork meatball, eggplant meatball and baccala meatball.
This instruction class is limited to ten participants!
